The Book Birthday Part of the Writing Life

Well what do you know? It's here, it's here, it's finally here! The loooong awaited book birthday for Mama's Home (and Baby Too!)—the sweet little story that took over 20 years to become a book—is here!

by Dawn Babb Prochovnic and Adèle Dafflon, Published by Familius

As I've noted in previous posts, I'll be celebrating in-person at a variety of locations throughout the Portland metro area, beginning with a book launch celebration at 11am TODAY (Tuesday, Oct 13, 2026) at Green Bean Books! Come join in for a baby shower themed book event!

I'll also be stopping by various blogs and podcasts for guest posts and interviews over the next several weeks. Vivian Kirkfield is hosting me for a Book Birthday post TODAY, where I share the long and winding road on the path to publication for this book, and that the first iteration of this story was a poem inspired by watching my young son play at our local children's museum, (PLUS a childhood pic!).

Interestingly, the version of the story (and there were many!) that was eventually picked up for publication, is the book I would have loved to have in hand when our family was preparing for the arrival of said son.

I was so excited that our family was growing, but I was also worried about how the transition would be experienced by our daughter. Most (if not all) of the "sibling" books that I found at the time (and still now) focused on the sibling relationship and/or the challenges and changes that would happen with the arrival of a new sibling.

I wished I'd had a book that focused on the mother/child bond. A book that would have conveyed to my daughter (and my own mama heart) that while our family was about to grow and change, the most important things, such as my love for her, would hold true.

I also wanted a book that focused less on the myriad of interruptions and disruptions to family life that were to be expected with the arrival of a new baby, and more on the familiarity and consistency of joyful family life that would continue to be shared into the future. Simple, precious things like going to the park, blowing bubbles, eating special breakfasts together on the weekends, snuggling close to share stories--all would continue to be an important part of our lives.

I went into labor very early in the morning on the day our son was born. I called my mom, who was the appointed person to come and stay with our daughter so my husband and I could head to the hospital to meet our new baby.

While I waited for my mom to arrive, I remember sitting on the edge of our daughter's bed while she was still sleeping, speaking to her softly. I remember saying, "There's a big storm coming your way, little one," then offering reassurances that my love for her was deep and true. That my heart was big enough for more. That my lap and my arms were big enough for more. And that we would learn how to be a family of four, together.

And we did.

There wasn't a book I could share with her at the time that tenderly conveyed those words in my heart. Now there is.

A book that both of my kids unknowingly contributed to in countless ways. A book about the bond between parent and child, set to the backdrop of joyful family life and childhood play. The kind of family life my husband and I aimed to create in our own home.

One of my favorite reviews for Mama's Home (and Baby Too!) comes from Dr. Sheila Modir via her DrSheilasBookshelf on Instagram.  She says in part:

"There are so many great books focused on the anticipation and arrival of a new sibling, but I've never come across a book that is focused on the MAMA coming home from the hospital after delivering a baby!

There's the countdown of the days and the boredom of the chores and the nervousness of what's to come and the joy of the reunion. So many BIG feelings this book prepares children for!"

Welcome to the world, sweet, new baby book of mine. I'm so glad you're here.

The Blog Tour Part of the Writing Life Returns (with Podcasts!)

Back in 2019, I created a blog entry for The Writing Life series, entitled, The Blog Tour Part of the Writing Life, which I've kept updated with links to various interviews and guest posts that I've participated in on other authors' websites, newsletters, and blogs.

With a new book coming out in October, I've returned more actively to the blog tour scene, and I thought it would be worthwhile to refresh this post with a new landing page.  As of this writing, I have TEN blog appearances in the pipeline (both interviews and guest posts) and several scheduled podcast appearances—a new adventure for me. I hope you'll follow along!

You can still access all of the older posts on the original landing page if you're interested in tracing my full history as an author (or have a specific interest in my potty humor books, sign language books, Lucy's Blooms, or my original path to publication), but in case you're most interested in more current news, the links in this post will give you the full story-behind-the-story on my latest publications, including, Mama's Home (and Baby Too!), the 95-word story that took over 20 years to become a book!

As with the earlier summary post, I'll keep this page updated as new guest posts and interviews are added.

Already out:

9/8/26:  Mary Boone's 6 Questions (where I share the best piece of advice a mentor has given to me)

10/8/26:  Joyce Uglow's uGROnews (where I share the types of imaginative play I engaged in as a child)

10/12/26: Jena Benton's Simply 7 (where I share my favorite illustrations in Mama's Home (and Baby Too!)

10/13/26: Vivian Kirkfield's Book Birthday Post (where you'll see childhood photos with my younger sister.)

The SCBWI Conference Part of the Writing Life

Hi Friends! Just popping in for a quick hello and update, since it's been a while since I uploaded an interview or guest post or posted myself. (NOTE: I typically provide a monthly professional update in my newsletter if you are ever itching to find out what I've been up to--last month's newsletter readers got to see a photo of Pickle the Cat facing off with a wild turkey, and the month before that, subscribers who preordered Mama's Home (and Baby Too!) received access to a free professional picture book critique from me!)

This past month I had the pleasure of attending the SCBWI-Oregon Spring Conference (Fun Fact: I received the first looks at the interiors of my first-ever picture book during a SCBWI-Oregon Conference back in 2009! I still think of that moment any time I gather with my SCBWI friends.)

Speaking of which, here is a photo of a gathering of fellow 12x12 members at the SCBWI-Oregon Conference -- that's two layers of professional friendship and collegiality there! (I don't recall who took the photo and I don't (yet!) know the names of everyone in the photo, otherwise I would have provided proper credit, but I wanted to share a little snippet of what it looks like to gather together with the kidlit community!)

I got so much out of the conference, and I have such deep gratitude for the SCBWI-Oregon volunteer leaders who put the conference together: Laura Byrd, Robin Chilstrom, Jordan Kim, along with the SCBWI-OR AdComm team. If YOU are looking for a way to get involved in the local kidlit community, definitely reach out to your local SCBWI chapter (you can check out available volunteer roles specific to SCBWI-Oregon here.)

I really loved the conference location--it was at the The Wingspan meeting space at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Hillsboro. Easy to get to (driving and parking or using public transportation), and the tall ceilings and big windows provided a nice vibe and excellent natural light.

The event opened with an amazing keynote from author Leslie Bernard Booth. If you ever get a chance to see her speak or do a book reading, GO! She is incredibly inspiring and her books are poetic and beautiful.

I also got a lot out of listening to first pages critiques and an info-packed agent panel, and I benefitted from the business of publishing talks by editors Melissa Manlove and Matt Phipps. I left the conference charged-up and ready to get busy on new work and get ready-work out into the world.

Speaking of getting ready-work out into the world, my next book, Mama's Home (and Baby Too!) comes out on October 13, 2026. Two weeks ago I got to see/approve final proofs for the interiors, and this past week, I got to see/approve final proofs for the front and back cover and the spine (I don't think I've ever gotten to see/approve a book spine before!)

I love this book so much, and I can't wait to share it with you. I've dropped in the final cover below -- and it's available for preorder everywhere books are sold, including bookshop.com--I hope you'll consider supporting your local indie bookstore.

Mama's Home (and Baby Too!) by Dawn Babb Prochovnic and Adèle Dafflon

I've also now met with my publisher's marketing team to discuss promotional plans for the book and review/approve the press release that will go out with advanced copies (reach out via email, social media channels such as Instagram, Bluesky or my Facebook fan page, or through my contact form (at the left of this post on the desktop version), if you'd like to be considered for the list to receive an advance copy to review.)

We are also in the midst of planning fun little extras to go along with the book (and eventually be added to the resources section of the website). Stay tuned for a Bingo-style game and a matching game to help families play together and plan together as they wait for a new baby (and as we wait for this new book baby)!

The Presale Promo Part of the Writing Life

If you’re a regular reader of The Writing Life series on my blog, then you may have already read about the long and winding path to publication for my next book, which comes out in October.

This is my 20th published children’s book, (21st if you count Oregon Reads Aloud, the award-winning anthology that I contributed to), and it’s my VERY FIRST board book!

It’s also the VERY FIRST time any of my books have been featured in a Barnes & Noble presale promotion! For a few short days, March 24 - March 26, 2026, copies of my book MAMA’S HOME (AND BABY TOO!) will be available on barnesandnoble.com for 25% off with the discount code PREORDER25.

If you are involved in the book world, you already know how important preorders are to helping a book find its wings—and if you are not, believe me when I say, it’s SUPER important!

Preorders help book buyers and publishers assess the level of overall interest in a book, and preorders help determine how many copies of the book will be printed in the first print run (not surprisingly, higher numbers are better!) Also, preorders are aggregated for statistics related to a book's fist week of sales (stronger preorders mean a book will have stronger reported sales for that first week, which helps create buzz.)

As I mentioned recently on various social media posts, when I preorder someone else’s book, it feels like a gift to myself on the day I order it, and then another gift to myself when it finally arrives! MAMA’S HOME (AND BABY TOO!) will arrive in October 2026.

This book will appeal to a wide variety of young families whose mamas are away from home from time to time (just about every young family I know!), and it will be an especially excellent gift book for families who have at least one child and who may be preparing for another.

The illustrations are by Adèle Dafflon, and they are absolutely adorable (you can get a sneak peek at the interior of the book by visiting my publisher’s (Familius') website.)

I would be honored and grateful if you considered preordering—you can preorder anytime before October, but you have until March 26, 2026 to jump on this deal.

(If you preorder two or more copies, let me know in the comments below … I will have a special something for you!)
